So, here's my hope: That vet-safe circles will spring up in churches throughout the US. Grassroots, each looking different, each vet-safe. I'm a civilian, wasn't there, can't understand, but - like every American - MUST understand if we're ever going to make wise choices, those informed by the Veteran's perspective on what really matters and what's worth the sacrifice and what isn't.
The following is a draft for a litany [set reading/prayer/statement] that such a vet-safe community might use to open a gathering. To remind all those present what the purpose of the group is, and to reset ground rules for what is and isn't OK.
All: We are here as Americans, each with a story of trauma and pain, and of healing and hope. We are here to support, not fix nor compare, for we cannot know or understand the fullness of the other's struggle, nor the contour of his or her way forward. Some of us have known war, some may have opposed war, but we all have torn down, and we yearn to rebuild - stronger and wiser. We are united in our will to see trauma redeemed, especially the scars of war.
Civilians: Our driving passion is the hear the voice of the veteran restored, recognizing that it was for us - on behalf of
our freedom and safety - that the ultimate sacrifice was risked and sometimes made. We need your voice to heal our unknowing.
Veterans: Our driving passion, often in the midst of great pain, is to assume our ordained role as guide, counselor, protector, and keeper of the peace, now that we've lived the lessons of war. It is only with your help that we will come
all the way home.
Civilians: Today, I will do all I am able to live a life worthy of your sacrifice.
Veterans: Today, I will do all I am able to be the guide worthy of your trust.
All: Today, in this sacred circle, I pledge to offer compassion, not judgment, to invite connection, not othering, and to invoke the Divine so that I may be an instrument of healing.
(optional) Amen.
I'm mostly poking in the dark, here. I need your feedback,
- What's missing?
- What's extra?
- What misses the point?
- What IS the point?
Again, it's about creating opportunities for meaningful connection between civilians and veterans. What happens during such a gathering? We'll discuss that some other time. This is simply a place to start. That is, if you will lend your voice.
