Until recently, laser cutters have not appeared in industrial installations.
They are expensive, difficult to operate and expensive to maintain.
However, as technology has improved, desktop laser cutters have become affordable and available to both hobbyists and small businesses.
For an affordable price, you can get a laser cutter capable of etching, engraving, and cutting.
This guide lists the best and most reliable laser cutter options for 2023.
1. Ortur Laser Master 3
Ortur Laser Master 3 (OLM 3) is the latest version of Ortur. It has a modern open frame design and comes in dark grey.
It has a total footprint of 23.1" x 25.9" and a work area of 15.74" x 15.74". The frame is made of aluminum and is very strong.
Ortur integrates most of the electronics, including the controller, within the frame, offering a futuristic design.
Powered by a 10W diode laser, the OLM 3 can work on wood, fabric, acrylic, paper, leather, plastic, foam, anodized metal, rubber and more.
In the video below, I review and test the performance of the Ortur Laser Master 3 on various materials.
I cut 2mm thick black acrylic using the setup Ortur claims on their website. I also engraved an aluminum card at full power at 5,000 mm/min.
The OLM 3 is belt driven along the X and Y axes. The maximum speed can reach 20,000 mm/min.
Along the Z axis, the machine is not motorized, you have to manually set the laser focus.
The Ortur Laser Master 3 relies on a TMC2209 stepper driver for sensorless homing, but the problem is that when the gantry hits the frame, there is a sudden load spike on the motor.
This machine supports WiFi, TF card, USB connection. The firmware is loaded onto a memory card, so it must be inserted into the device for it to function properly.
The OLM 3 is compatible with LightBurn, LaserGRBL and Laser Explorer software. Ortur has also released the new software OLM3 Web Control for the Ortur Laser Master 3. It is a web-based control software.
Unlike most diode laser machines, the OLM 3 has an on/off lock integrated into the frame for extra security.
2. Sculpfun S30 Pro Max
The Sculpfun S30 Pro Max is a new laser engraver in the S30 series from the maker of Sculpfun. The S30 series offers machines in 3 configurations - the 20W Sculpfun S30 Pro Max, the 10W Sculpfun S30 Pro, and the 5W Sculpfun S30 Laser Engraver.
You can choose the right machine according to your needs. The 5W is good for sculpting and light cutting, similar to the previous Sculpfun S9 we also reviewed. The 10W module strikes a good balance between price and performance, and should perform similarly to the Sculpfun S10 we also reviewed. In this review, we will focus on the most powerful 20W version.
The main features of the S30 series are:
Fully functional air assist system
Automatic control via software for air assist pump (included).
Replaceable protective lens, significantly extending service life
Two-axis expandable workspace – up to 935mmx905mm
Includes 32-bit motherboard with Bluetooth wireless connectivity
Improved x-axis industrial high-precision guide rail
Dual axis limit switch
3. Atomstack S20 Pro
In fact, there is no difference between the Atomstack A20 Pro and the Atomstack S20 Pro. The difference is only in the color of the machine. They are all equipped with the same 20W quad diode Atomstack M100 laser module. The story is the same as the previous model, the Atomstack S10 Pro, also known as the A10 and S10 Pro. This is the system Atomstack uses to differentiate machines sold by different vendors. Otherwise they are the same.
The main features of Atomstack S20 Pro / A20 Pro are:
Touch screen offline controller (offline engraving from SD card)
Powerful Air Assist Pump
Dual axis limit switch
32-bit motherboard
