In particular, while Manara's notes refer to "slapped," the majority of witnesses including Newsome and Birch also used the word "hit" for the purpose of describing the incident Rice said. Manara himself acknowledged that the section of his notes detailing the attack was not "verbatim."

Heather McPhee, the associate general counsel for the Madden NFL 24PA, also kept notes at the time of the meeting, and put Rice's phrasing in quotation marks, which she said indicated something he said directly. The focus on the pertinent quote is McPhee's.
