In a story that will surprise no one who has even a lick of common sense and/or intellectual honesty, the national director of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Veterans Health Administration suggests that women may have significant difficulty with the heavy loads toted by combat arms Soldiers. Why does this matter? Well this same director, Dr. David Cifu, says that as a result, "(t)he average female will have trouble as infantry soldiers must carry a load often weighing more than 80 pounds for many hours at a time over rugged terrain in some cases... ...“I’m certain the majority of women doing this won’t be physically able to do it as long as the men. It’s a matter of body size and body mechanics,” Cifu said. http://www.military.com/daily-news/2013/04/10/heavy-loads-could-burden-womens-infantry-role.html?comp=7000023317828&rank=1 I'm pretty sure the counter arguments will run the gamut from "he's a man" to "how will we know till they actually get a chance" to "oh yeah, you should carry a baby to term". While all of those are interesting, none will actually address the strong, multi-decade anecdotal evidence that suggests Infantry folk tote some huge rucks. And, despite all attempts to fix that, it is what it is. This should be fun to watch erupt.
