The Iraq war was a tough slog and there were many missteps and tough days along the way. But it was a victory. We won, and in doing so we handed the Iraqi people the reins to an actual democracy, if they can keep it. We also had a chance to influence their future by staying there and helping them navigate the difficult path they were on.We did just that in Germany, Italy and Japan after WWII and in Korea and those are all democracies and allies. In Iraq we packed up and are in grave danger of losing the peace. In order to get the first Iraqi government to become a government, President Bush made a deal with the Iraqis saying we would leave. This was necessary to get some of the parties to even consider joining the process. It was not meant to be a final agreement as the construction of our giga-embassy there shows we were planning on a lasting presence. But when time came to renegotiate a final deal, the Obama team went out of its way to torpedo any serious relationship and used the interim deal as cover to bug out. This fit with Obama's disdain for the Iraq war and his role as lead castrati of the cut and run chorus in Congress while President Bush was trying to win. The problem with losing the war, or the peace, has always been the prospect of Iranian influence filling the vacuum as we left. Well those Islamist expansionist chickens are coming home to roost. The latest indication of US weakness: Iraq is allowing Iran to use its airspace to airlift supplies and weapons to help prop up Bashar al-Assad’s embattled government in Syria. Well there is a nice kick in the teeth, nobody could have seen that coming. Well except almost everyone with a clue. We have a completely incoherent or non-existent policy regarding the Middle East and as Obama fiddles, the region burns.
