The Longest War

Often, we are approached about doing book reviews. I will admit I am way behind on some; but, some books make it easy to say yes. Easy to say yes, but sometimes hard to read even though they are technically an easy read. The Longest War is just that, technically an easy read. However, I'm having to ration it a bit and read it a bit at the time. The book is a collection of short stories, told by the men and women who've been there, done that. The people who saw life as they know it change on 9-11 and what has come after. The stories are real, and the words are the words of the troops -- raw, powerful, and unconcerned with the literary fad of the moment. The tone and styles vary, but what comes out is real -- the real person, the real story, simply the real. An amazing amount of dust was in the electronic copy I was sent a couple of weeks ago, so be warned. I've also laughed so hard it isn't funny. The words take me back, and I can see clearly some of what they are describing. There are parallels to The Blog of War, but they are two different animals. One paved the way for the other, but they complement each other in a way I can't quite put into words. This is an interesting and powerful read. My thanks to SFC Holmes for sending me an advance copy, and my strongest thanks to all who wrote lies within. LW who hopes to Ifni he is never so bored as to ever consider the scorpion game...
