This should shock no one paying attention, but the benefits earned by military retirees are now fair game in the budget cutting farce. As Washington looks to squeeze savings from once-sacrosanct entitlements like Social Security and Medicare, another big social welfare system is growing as rapidly, but with far less scrutiny: the health and pension benefits of military retirees. I have heard close to zero talk, other than from the only adult in the room Paul Ryan, about cutting the actual fiscal death trap- Social Security. But since we are ending the wars it seems that some of the slimy favor-mongers in Washington think that the military can be a soft target. Social Security is a Ponzi scheme; that is simple enough to understand for anyone not blinded by the joy of redistributing other people's money. Medicare and Medicaid are giveaways, pure and simple. Sure it is nice to make sure that as many people as possible get medical care, but it is a giveaway when the government simply hands them the money to do so. Not to mention welfare and any number of other ways the looters and the moochers squeeze the productive to give to the lazy and losers. Military retirement benefits are the most truly difficultly earned payments our government makes....period. The idea that folks who have spent the best years of their lives away from their families and in mortal danger would be first on the chopping block is shameful to even contemplate. It shows again how the platitudes that drip from the pinched lips those who say they support the troops were just that. They do not, and they said those things only because their policies around our wars were so embarassing they felt the need to spout lies for covering fire. Elections matter and the one next year matters as much as any I can remember in my adult life. The choice is stark and scary. Keeo the America last, screw the troops, make the Pentagon hold bake sales, money-redistributing, big government, tax-addicted swine in power. Or throw the bums out. Your vote counts. Disclaimer- I took a lump sum check during the "peace dividend" time but get no other retirement bennies and have no personal stake in this fight.
