US Army Air Force Lieutenant Robert F Elliott was flying his P-38 on a training exercise off the coast of Wales in 1942 when he suffered engine failure and crashed near the beach. Elliot walked away unharmed. Unfortunately, he went missing in action three months later in Tunisia. The P-38 went MIA, too, covered by sand until shifting seas revealed it temporarily in 2007. TIGHAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery) has dubbed the aircraft the "Maid of Harlech" and has committed to recovering the airframe which, oddly, has not suffered too badly from immersion in salt water for seventy years.
