Contoversy alert. PVT Buckles our last WWI vet died and some, including his family, have been lobbying to have his body placed in the Capitol Rotunda. I have heard quite a few folks joining this call and complaining that denying this is some sort of slight. Well no it isn't. Buckles served honorably and lived a long life, good on him. But the proper place to render him honors is at Arlington. There is no reason to make a fuss over this as it has never been part of the military tradition. Mr. Buckles was simply a statistical anomaly and that does not inherently require rendering the honor of lying in state in the Rotunda. I relaize that the request is made to honor all of those who served in WWI but again, that is why we have a National Cemetery at Arlington. It is a far more honorable place than a building that also houses our Congress.
