Congratulations Troop 19

A family friend was kind enough to send me a very special bulletin from the church I attended for many years. That church has been host to Boy Scouts of America Troop 19 for many years, in fact for something headed towards 100 years. It seems that in February, a milestone of sorts was passed, with there having been 333 Eagle Scouts from that Troop since its original charter. The first to earn Eagle (for it is earned, not given or even awarded) was Edward Coates in 1924. The latest is Russ Vaughn (no relation to the military poet of note as far as I know) in December of last year. It is out of favor with the chattering classes right now, but Scouting has done and is doing a lot for the country, the world, and most especially for the youth of today. I credit Scouting with my being alive and doing much of what I am doing today. It made a huge difference in my life, and it is something I do recommend (highly, even). Just look at the number of good leaders in the military, government, and industry that are products of Scouting. As for some of the issues that give the chattering types the vapors, well, those are for vigorous, forthright, and honest discussion within Scouting to debate and determine what -- if any -- changes are needed. Then again, I strongly suspect that those who hate Scouting do so for reasons other than what they give... As for me, I can't speak to current Scouting that well, having been one of the last of the "Old Way" Eagles to come out of Troop 19 (and doggone proud of it, too). My congratulations to Troop 19, of the Central Georgia Council. LW
