Happy Birthday Boss

I will be honest, and admit that you scared the hell out of me when you came into office. I was young, callow, and had a lot to learn -- and learn it I did. We didn't always agree, but you respected discourse and even encouraged it within the bounds of propriety. We never did agree on some things, but on others we did, and great things happened for the good on your watch. I know that some of what wasn't good bothered you, far more than your detractors will ever acknowledge, and that you did make an effort to fix things where you could. You did a lot very quietly, without fanfare, and visiting Dover to meet those who died on your watch was one of them. No cameras, no fuss, no muss, as it was about them, not about you. You were loyal to a fault on occasion to those around you, but that beats the alternatives hands-down. By the time you left office you no longer scared me. You did a lot of good, and tough love worked on many levels. It took me a while to realize that I had in essence become Ronin when you departed. I count myself lucky, for while two of the worst Presidents this nation has ever seen were in my lifetime I have also been fortunate enough to have also seen one of the best. Happy Birthday Ronald Wilson Reagan. LW
