The latest attempt to minimize the actual threat we face from radicalized Islamists here in America is that the FBI entraps them into doing things they would otherwise never have done. Juicebox Mafia member Adam Serwer takes a stab at it here. A plot to bomb the D.C. subway system. An attack on American troops at Fort Dix, New Jersey. An attempt to kill Americans holding a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland, Oregon. All of these potential terrorist attacks sound frightening, but not a single one was ever in danger of actually happening. They were all part of a series of elaborate sting operations orchestrated by the government in its attempt to be proactive about preventing domestic terrorism. It didn't want to wait for body counts on the evening news. His last line points out the importance of the FBI pre-empting these attacks. His statement that not a single one was ever in danger of actually happening is stunningly naïve. How in the Hell could he know that? The only reason that they were in no danger of happening is precisely because the FBI caught the scumbags. They wanted to kill infidels and their failure was wanting to pull off a bigger attack than they could have done on their own. Let’s look at three other attempts to kill us. First Richard Reid, the Shoe non-Bomber- failure to explode, Abdul Mutallab, the junk burner- failure to explode, Shazhad, the Times Square propane deliveryman- failure to explode. I don’t know about you, but I see a trend. You see it it’s easy to make a bomb, just isn’t that damn easy to make one explode. The hard part is a detonator that turns things up to 11. We can’t hope they won’t eventually solve that hardly insurmountable problem. All of the jackwagons Serwer mentions wanted to build bombs and kill Americans, they were just not bright enough to keep their groups small, or better yet to work alone. MAJ Hasan worked alone, stayed away from bombs and laid a horrific blow on us. We cannot expect our enemies to continue to screw up this simple formula and the terrorist magazine Inspire has already held up Hasan and the lone wolf model as the preferred technique against us. A couple nights ago I got to help out Jim Robbins with his Masters in International Terrorism course. This was the second year I was a guest grader as his students broke down into cells, formed terrorist groups, identified their ideologies and goals, and then planned attacks on the US in detail. It was simultaneously enjoyable and horrifying. It was a stark reminder that planning and executing a successful mass casualty attack in the US is hardly rocket science. It should be abundantly apparent to anyone paying attention that talking about violent jihad against the United States is going to catch people’s attention. We cannot afford to ignore it and whenever possible we must follow up to find out if the trash talkers want to really walk the walk. The clown in Oregon turned down numerous chances to avoid killing innocents. He was hell-bent on slaughtering as many infidels as he could. So he said the magic words “Allahu Akbar” and instead of a blinding explosion slaughtering hundreds, maybe thousands, he got flashing lights and a ticket to prison. Well done FBI, that is what we pay you for. Now back into the fray, ‘cuz he was certainly not the last.
