[Disclaimer: Once owned a Black Yukon Canadian Wolf. Best. Dog. Ever!] This is the story of Atticus. According to an animal shelter, a Soldier deployed to Afghanistan and left his dog with his mom. The dog ended up in the animal shelter. Not long ago, I had heard that Atticus had been put down by mistake. However, some really great human beings have saved Atticus and are now trying to find the Soldier. You might see interviews and radio spots in the Southwest about it. But we need to do more. That is where you come in...If there is a deployed Soldier (probably from Arizona originally) who owns a Wolfdog, chances are, that his dog is in Colorado now. Atticus: A Soldier's Wolfdog by George Brauneis on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 10:43am Hi my name is Atticus. I'm a rather large and very tall wolfdog who's master was deployed to Afghanistan in service to our country. I was left with my Soldier's mom to look after me in Flagstaff, AZ but she was unable to care for me because I'm so big and I'm not all that coordinated. I've been told I'm as graceful as a bull in a China closet. I've also been told I eat like a horse. I can't help either I'm just a big boy with a huge heart and I'm eager to please. I was dropped off at the Coconino Humane Society by my Soldier's Mom because no one was able to care for me. Unfortunately the Coconino Humane Society had to put me in quarantine and on Death Row because I'm a Wolfdog. For some reason because I'm a wolfdog and I'm so big I was labeled as DANGEROUS and 'Not For Adoption' Fortunately Kathy at the humane society got word out to Danya Leshick the Director of Where Wolves Rescue. She also contacted Kim Kahl of High Mt. Desert Wolfdog Rescue. Danya and Kim set things in motion to rescue me and Ausra Rowell placed a wonderful plea for help on Facebook. My new best friend George Brauneis of Hotchkiss, Colorado saw the following post by Ausra Rowell on Kim Kahl's Facebook Wall and knew he had to act on this and do whatever it took to save me. George has a wonderful wolfdog named Eragon and was able to work with Kim to rescue me. http://www.facebook.com/notes.php?id=1246212671&notes_tab=app_2347471856#!/note.php?note_id=457867101427&comments He wants so bad to reunite me with my brave soldier. I've been told that the town of Hotchkiss, CO lost one of their very own heroes in Afghanistan; Army Sgt. Aaron B. Cruttenden on November 7th, 2010. You can read about him here if you follow this link: http://www.deltacountyindependent.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18441%3Asgt-cruttenden-honored-as-a-hero&catid=35%3Anorth-fork&Itemid=345 George told me that he had it written on his heart to save me from execution because this was one death due to the war in Afghanistan that he could prevent. I've been saved :-) Please pray for my Soldier's safety. I've been told that George got up at 3:30 am on Tuesday November 23rd, 2010 and was on the road at five to head towards Flagstaff, AZ to come rescue me. He stopped by and picked up Malinda Shepard along the way so he wouldn't have to make the 480 mile (one way) drive alone. Malinda is a local wolfdog expert and really made the trip more enjoyable and safer for George to make. At about 2:30 pm there was some excitement at the Coconino Humane Society I was told that I had two visitors that had come to take me to the mountains of Colorado. I was told that George and Malinda were very compassionate people and that I didn't have anything to fear. Colorado sounded like a great new adventure and I was told that I would have a wonderful ride in George's pickup truck to get there. I love going for rides!! George had a nice memory foam dog bed and a big warm blanket for me in the back of his truck. I also had a nice bowl of water and a stuffed animal. the truck has a nice cozy topper on it so I was traveling first class. We even got to stop at MacDonald's on the way and I got a little bit of a hamburger :-) I also give Malinda a whole lot of wolfdog kisses. I was just so happy to be out of jail and on a wonderful road trip!! We finally got to George's home safely at about 1:30 am on Wednesday morning. George had been up for 22 hours! He told me it was Wolf-Angels that brought us home safely. Meeting my new pack: When I got to my new home I had to wait for a few extra minutes in the truck while George went inside and put Harley and Eragon into the bedroom so I wouldn't be overwhelmed by another wolfdog and two dogs when I entered the house. George came back for me and I could smell Sandy, Harley, and Eragon on his jacket. I got to meet Sandy his oldest dog first as I entered the house. Sandy was very kind to me but she let me know that she was the pack mother and that she set the example for all pack members to follow. Next I got to meet Harley, the smallest member of the pack as if a Rottweiler mix could ever be considered small. He may be half my size but wow he's all muscle! He has a huge heart and he's becoming my best friend. Finally I was introduced to Eragon who's a large all white low content wolfdog that has the most amazing and beautiful coat you've ever seen. It took Eragon and I two or three days to really get along. Now he's so much fun to run with and chase around the yard. He is so fast! All you see is a white blur fly by. Here's a photo of my new pack mates; Eragon, Harley, and Sandy Eragon, Harley,...
