Congress to Raise their own pay but not Military pay in a time of War?!

Over at This Ain't Hell, we give Jonn Lilyea the money quote of the day [bold emphasis is mine]: I mentioned earlier that the Obama Administration moved to freeze government employees’ pay today. Not to be outdone, Steny Hoyer, the soon-to-be minority whip from Maryland said that the president should also freeze military pay as well according to The Hill; Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said including the military would have increased savings and add “an element of fairness.” He made the comments in a statement about he president’s announcement of a two-year pay freeze. An added “element of fairness” would be to freeze Congressional pay including Congressional staff, wouldn’t it Steny?... Jonn is correct. Although I would ask Congress to show some gumption and take a pay cut to support our men and women in harm's way...but Congress has used (and will use) a special legislative trick every year to authorize their pay and allowances increased without actually having to vote on it. The last thing we should do is freeze military pay increases in the middle of wrapping up one war and amping up the other war...and then let's not forget that we could be at war on the Korean pennisula next week... I've met Steny Hoyer. I think he's a decent guy most of the time (and somewhat of a hawkish "D"). But this is just plain assinine. The rumor doctor at Stars & Stripes has more too.
