Infantrymen, I have to speak up on the race Ilario Pantano is running as a Republican. I've looked into him. I've read the reports. I've read the hearing notes. And while I supported the investigation and the hearing at the time -- the chief witness against him was a Marine Corps NCO, and it would have been wrong to ignore him even though the man had a personal beef with Pantano -- it is clear to me that Pantano did nothing wrong. Or at least nothing a reasonable man wouldn't have done in his situation. What brings me out of the woodwork are the following: 1) Pantano was a mustang. Which is to say that instead of taking the easier path to military leadership of ROTC or West Point, he rose through the ranks to become an NCO first, before having a successful civilian career as an investment banker, and then going back into the Marine Corps through OCS. 2) There is a particularly ugly smear website called thefactsaboutpantano.com, that is owned and operated and written by the North Carolina Democratic Party. If you go to Google and do a search for that website, and then click the sponsored link you'll see: A link to his Article 32 hearing, but no mention that he has an honorable discharge, and no summary of its findings. A link which implies that he supports federal funding of gay pornography, supposedly because his wife was a model in the 80's who once posed for Robert Mapplethrope. A link claiming that he lied about being a police officer because he was inactive at the time someone asked him whether or not being a police oficer was his job. A link claiming Pantano thinks he's above the law because he once parked in a yellow zone while dropping off some mail. [ed: And anyone who has ever driven over 55 is above the law?] A link insinuating that he hates firefighters and wants to return the era of horse & buggy firefighting because he opposed federal pork in the form of brand new firetrucks. Lame. Anway, I hope this endorsement puts Mr. Pantano over the top. And while I'm not going to link to this ugly little smear website, I do recommend that you use the google machine to find "the facts about pantano" until it comes up on the sponsored links, so you can click through and see whether or not you agree with me. -- Uber Pig
