Our team in Maine is busy supporting our troops and honoring the memories of our Fallen. If you are in New England this weekend, please consider volunteering or supporting the event. This Sunday, August 22nd, is the annual Run for The Fallen. This is an event that honors those brave individuals from Maine that have lost their lives during the current Iraq/Afghanistan wars. It is a 65 kilometer run from Ogunquit to Monument Square in Portland. At each kilometer, a sign and picture honoring one of the fallen is placed; one kilometer for each of the 65 that have been killed in action since 9-11. Last year there were 58. To honor and recognize the incredible sacrifices the families have made, the organizers are asking volunteers to sign up to stand at each marker along the route as the runners pass by. To 'stand with those who are lost', so they are not alone. The Wounded Heroes Program of Maine feels this is an important event and has organized teams of volunteers to stand beside markers along the route. I would love to see even more people come aboard and show support to the 65 families being honored on Sunday. Following the reception at Monument Square as the runners reach the finish line, everyone will be heading over to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth for a lobster bake. Our volunteer teams will also be offering our time to serve the families during this meal. We welcome anyone with the time and desire to help to come and join us. You can visit www.runforthefallen.org for more information. If you will be joining our team, contact our Maine Director, Pam Payeur, and register on the site as a volunteer. Thank you!
