So, you decided to publish the names of Afghan citizens who worked with us against the Taliban. They knew who the Taliban were, of course. They'd lived under their rule for some years. Some of them didn't want to see a return to those days. But you knew that anyone who worked with Americans had blood on their hands. Well, you taught them. Late last week, just four days after the documents were published, death threats began arriving at the homes of key tribal elders in southern Afghanistan. And over the weekend one tribal elder, Khalifa Abdullah, who the Taliban believed had been in close contact with the Americans, was taken from his home in Monar village, in Kandahar province’s embattled Arghandab district, and executed by insurgent gunmen. The violence may just be beginning. Congratulations. Now you can see the blood on your hands, too. Don't feel bad. Better men than you have blood on them, and even the best men. It doesn't go away, though: so you'd better make sure it was worth it. Was it?
