I highlighted the recent "deal" Iran struck with Brazil and Turkey as an example of how the policy of engagement was failing the Obama team. That is an understatement, it is failing the world. The policy is based on the fundamentally-flawed notion that if you just talk enough with your adversaries and enemies they will realize that we are all just carbon-based life forms on this insignificant rock hurtling through time and space and we all really can just get along. As a pacifist I would love to live on this mythical planet surrounded by the non-existent reasonable people. It just doesn't exist. The people who serve as Obama's advisers on foreign policy seem to believe that if we simply keep extending our hand, eventually our enemies will shake it. They think that we don't actually have enemies, just folks who don't understand our inner goodness yet. Or that we don't have a right to judge other countries and people because we are flawed ourselves. They seem quite willing to place America on the same moral plane as countries like China, which has the blood of tens of millions of it's own citizens on its hands, a gulag where countless political prisoners are tortured or worked to death, and nothing even approaching basic liberty. They watch in silence as the Iranian religious thugocracy slaughters its citizens in the streets for pointing out that a grotesquely fixed election was just that. They round up the survivors and send them for rape and torture in their prisons. There is nothing that is going to stop the Iranians from developing nuclear weapons except regime change or crippling military strikes, period. Why in the hell would they stop when they are this close? They have already shown they want to dominate the region and they have actively incited insurgencies on Iraq and Afghanistan killing US troops. They are the patrons of the terrorist groups Hezbollah and Hamas arming and aiming them at Israel. Syria is their client and has been actively trying to get its own nukes. They have very tight relations with Venezuela and now Brazil, both of whom have nuclear ambitions and in Brazil's case a nascent program. All of this bad acting was done without the added cover that being a nuclear power provides. How ambitious will they be when they can turn Tel Aviv into a parking lot if pushed too far? The current charade of sanctions is not going to stop them and everyone playing the game knows it. Our team feels that the process itself is somehow so important that we must continue it lest we seem uncivilized. So formalized lying in formal wear will happen. Petit fours will be nibbled and mint tea will be drunk poolside, and the end result will be a nuclear-armed Iranian regime that believes the world must descend into chaos to bring about the return of the 12th Imam. Does any rational being believe that once they get nukes they will suddenly feel self-actualized and settle down to liberalizing their country and making the lives of their people better? They want to be a regional hegemon and then a global power broker. They want to be the mecca of a Shia renaissance that spreads the good word to all of Dar al Harb. Engage that.
