A topic in the comments here in days past has been why some of us support the troops having pets, or even chastize us for helping in efforts to get those pets home, given the dictates of General Order 1. After all, is it not a duty to enforce rules and support the chain of command? Well, rules are not always good ones, and sometimes not clearly understood by those on the ground (command or otherwise). Sometimes, there are very good reasons the rules should not be enforced to the absolute letter and the exemptions that exist should rule the day. Go here and read about Rufus, a hero who saved the lives of many of his troops with quick thinking and action. Read of Sasha who died trying to defend her troops as well. The exemptions are there for a reason, for more than once dogs have given alarm, attacked, or otherwise acted to save the lives of our troops. Rufus deserves our thoughts and prayers as he fights a new battle, and Sasha a hoisted drink or three. Remember them even as you keep the troops wounded instead of killled in our thoughts. Remember why they were wounded, and not killed. As for Rufus and the wish of the troops, Baghdad Pups is on the case. While you are over looking at the story, take a look at this one as well. I know that there are some who don't like giving money to causes, or worry that it won't go where intended. Well, there's an option and one that is needed. I'm sure that there are times when MaryAnn and the volunteers and Landstuhl look at what's gone and what hasn't gone, scratch their heads, and go WTF??? Since different things go at different times, MaryAnn is posting each month a list of most needed items. If you don't want to send money, look at sending some of the items she lists each month. A little birdie has let me know that plain sweat pants in M and L, and some phone cards, would be very much appreciated. Meantime, keep Rufus in your thoughts, and remember Sasha -- and keep in mind the number of lives they saved. Rules, even General Order 1, have exemptions for a reason and they are the latest to show us why. LW
