CDR Salamander is pointing out some things about one of the Saints players that bears a little scrutiny. You see, Kyle Eckels, a fullback, went to the Naval Academy but didn't serve in the Navy. Now I kinda though that was the point of the whole thing. My Dad graduated from West point and then spent 2 years in Vietnam and more in the States before he moved on. Phib gives some props to a sportswriter who is not letting this slide. Bravo Zulu to Gregg Doyle at CBS. He gets it - and puts Hall of Shame member Eckel in the right light. If you came here looking for answers, you're out of luck. I have no answers. Not when the topic is New Orleans Saints fullback Kyle Eckel. And not when the question is this: Why is Eckel, who ran for 1,147 yards at Navy in 2004, playing in Super Bowl XLIV instead of fulfilling his military obligation in the United States Navy? I understand that exceptions to service obligations do get made and the academies get some publicity from that. But is this the example we want to show. Pat Tillman made the opposite sacrifice and paid with his life. I think Eckels ought to at least pay his tuition back with the fat check he gets win or lose this game.
