In the nice suburban town of Gurnee, Illinois, the mayor has vetoed a unanimous city council vote to build a war memorial. Gurnee has lost six of it's sons in the Long War and a Gold Star dad is leading the charge to get a memorial built. Here is the note from Bev Perlson, founder of The Band of Mothers: It is unbelievable that the Gurnee Mayor is continuing to show her ignorance and arrogance once again. Many of us have showed up twice now regarding this War Memorial in Gurnee for our Beloved Fallen Heroes. Please attend the Village Board Meeting on January 25th, at 7pm at Gurnee Town Hall 225 N. O'Plaine Road Gurnee, Illinois If you are in the Chicago or northern Illinois area, please consider attending the rally. FoxNews will be there, too. More background info after the Jump. Here is a letter to the Village Board from Mary Alger:Subject: Blind, Unbridled Arrogance by Kristi Kovarik... Gurnee Village Trustees: I am writing you as an angry, disbelieving, law abiding, tax-paying, United States military supporting American. I attended and spoke at the village board sessions that included the matter of the Heroes for Freedom Memorial to be built in Gurnee, IL. At first I was confused as to the boards seeming indifference to the matter at hand, then I came to understand the disrespect and disregard for GOLD STAR FATHER Kirk Morris' plea for continuing on the Memorial. Next I saw the worst display of character imaginable - Absolute ARROGANCE by several of the board members and most especially from the Mayor. How could it be that in the very village that has lost six of it's best and bravest become the next battleground for their loved ones? In what country would an agreement with a GOLD STAR FATHER and his mission to honor those that have fought and died for this country be summarily dismissed both physically (those board members that didn't even look up when he spoke), and through back stabbing political posturing? This board represented a microcosim of all that is wrong in this world. What I witnessed was a group that demonstrated a person's word is no longer his bond and a person's character is not on display. It is no small wonder that such an assembly would not understand the word, the bond and the sacrafice that was given on their behalf as it appears to be the primary goal of this Mayor to display the unbridled arrogance of man. After a very contentious start, an agreement had been made between the PFC. Geoffery Morris Memorial Foundation and the village. The Mayor then put down her iron fist and squashed the agreement. Is there a more obvious abuse of power on the local level? Is this how Gurnee honors its heroes? For the reasons I set forth above, I ask you, during the January 25, 2010 Village Board meeting, to OVERRIDE Mayor Kristi Kovarik’s veto of the “HEROES FOR FREEDOM MEMORIAL DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE VILLAGE OF GURNEE AND THE PFC. GEOFFREY MORRIS MEMORIAL FOUNDATION.” My word, my bond, my country, Mary Alger Here is the response from the Gurnee Mayor about this incident. She claims that there has been five years of inept management of funds and of the process. My opinion is that the village can protect itself and still move ahead on this memorial. I also believe that it is vastly unfair to criticize the PFC Geoffrey Morris Memorial Foundation for the last five years when the approval for the memorial occurred just two months ago.
