What a soldier's father knows

Jamie Allman is a radio host on St. Louis' 97.1 TALK, and I have been on his show numerous times. He is s tremendous patriot and apparently raising his kids right. He has one right now who is deployed to Iraq and he wrote an excellent piece about that for the St. Louis paper. My eldest son Ethan turned 20 years old on Saturday. Most dads would agree it's always a monumental occasion when the boys get this far. But for our family it was an even bigger deal since Pfc. Ethan Allman turned 20 proudly peering from a gun turret aboard an American tank in Iraq. I'll never forget his first birthday. We were glued to the TV while George H.W. Bush announced the invasion of Iraq and Kuwait. My dear son was barely on solid foods when we first dabbled deeply and violently in the Middle East. Today, he is there trying to make sure we never have to go back — and trying to make sure his little brothers and sister don't have to go either. Godspeed PFC Allman, and thanks.
