[B5 NOTE: This is an annual repost.] I didn't go to West Point. But I did become a habitual watcher of the Army-Navy game when I was a young enlisted soldier - my Commander was somehow able to receive the broadcast of the game when we were deployed. Watching it brought us closer together and closer to home. For those who don't really get it, the Army-Navy game, between the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, and the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, is possibly one of the most intense football rivalries of all time. For over a century (and ten years without games), it has usually been the last game of the regular season and this season's A-N game will occur this Saturday. Long ago, Army and Navy were the best football teams for decades and the Army-Navy game determined a championship. However, only in one game in over forty years did both teams have a winning season. That doesn't seem to matter most times, though, as the spirit of the competition can energize the teams. The hyper-competitiveness of the game represents not just a rivalry in branch of service, but of service to the country. It's a healthy rivalry and respect is paid to both the Army and the Navy at the end of the day. Remember that the young men on the football field this Saturday will soon be leading troops and fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan or where-ever-the-hell-else we send them. Besides, in the end, one thing can be agreed upon by both sides of the Army-Navy game... ... The Air Force Sucks!
