h/t Abu Mookie Gen. McChrystal has published a seven page guide discussing how to conduct COIN operations and while I don't have any real quarrels with it, there isn't much there, there. I would summarize it as: Make friends with the Afghans, keep them safe, don't do things that will piss them off. Play nice with the Afghan Army and soon they will be kicking ass Help build actual government Rinse and repeat The document has a very odd tone for a piece of military writing, it feels like a self help seminar or corporate motivation piece. It has little sidebar vignettes on each page about good or bad things ISAF units have done. Now again I will say I agree with pretty much everything it says, but it is a definitely non-warriorish document. That makes sense given the aim of showing sweetness and light and the milk of human kindness to the local populace, but I was almost expecting to see little cartoon representations of GIs planting crops and digging wells along side their Afghan partners with big smiles on their faces.
