Argghhh!

The Medal opens today with one from the Civil War, a flag capture at Luray, Virginia, in 1864. We also have an interesting little piece of trivia from the Philippine Insurrection. Another item of note - all these awards went to living recipients, making this a rare day for the Medal.BAYBUTT, PHILIP Rank and organization: Private, Company A, 2d Massachusetts Cavalry. A very unusual day for the Medal. On my first swing through the database, I came across zero Medals for this day in history. That circumstance being such an unlikely anomaly, I went back through - and I'm glad I did.This is an unusual day for the Medal in that, while there are three Medals, they are for one fight, at Red Creek, Az, in 1869. There were 12 Medals awarded for actions on this day in history. Eight during the Civil War, one during WWII, two for Korea, and one earned in Vietnam. The Civil War opens with a Medal earned before there was a Medal (the Medal being authorized in July of 1863). It was earned just down the road from where I live, in Lexington, Missouri in 1861 at the Batte of the Hay (well, actually, Hemp) Bales, followed by one at Shepherdstown Ford in 1862.
