Leave aside the irony -
Clearly, the vetting process was flawed. And one wonders, over a career, how many times a problem with alcohol was covered by his bosses? I.e., a cultural problem in the Air Force?
And the Navy.
And the Army.
And, frankly, probably the USMC, as well.
And the Democrat party.
And the Republicans.
Heh. I see that ol' demon rum is at the bottom of a lot of things.
So, intervene early. Quit covering for people. Doesn't mean you have to kill a career (unless the guy or gal is just a slow learner), but you do need to exercise positive leadership.
Change the culture.
Because one thing I'm sure of in the bulk of cases (and probably this one, too) - the time they catch the public eye is usually not the first time it's happened. Someone has covered for them before, vice held them accountable.
