The little gizmo here is an Artillery Plotter, No 1, of Aussie WWII vintage. That is a very tiny plotter, I can't imagine trying to use it at night.
In the pic below, the one above it is its younger brother, which debuted in 1957. It essentially does the same thing, but is *much* easier to read and work with.
