 Meh.

Yesterday's event points to a serious dilemma. All the mass-shooters have been unwell people who had contact with the system at multiple points. We used to warehouse folks in the bad old days (and I do mean bad). Then, in the name of their personal freedom, we kicked 'em out (and people who in the bad old days would have been warehoused are now enjoying (some of them truthfully so, but I rather suspect most of them not so much) their freedom to sleep on park benches. Those people are generally not a part of this problem set.

The ones who are a part of it are the ones who generally make it through the day without calling too much attention to themselves, often to the point of invisibility.

And they often seek help, or get directed to it by some arm of "the system" (which really isn't a system). But don't always stick with it. And then the rare (very rare statistically, if all too spectacularly) one snaps. And we don't have any way to tell who those people are. Or to prevent them from getting guns, legally and openly. Sure, it seems clear in retrospect. But it's never so clear prior.

Meh.

Most of the proposals advanced on the gun control side won't do anything to stop this. But of course, most of those are being advanced to use this event for another agenda.
