The task was, "Identify this rifle."
I knew it was going to challenge you, simply because it is a very uncommon rifle.
Not as much a challenge for John (Not The Armorer), what with him being an ebbil arms dealer and such, but even he was off the scent as to *which* edition of the M1899 it was.
Remington-Lee rifle with the magazine removed. Not sure which contract or model. My guess would be the 1899 model.
Condition and marks on the stock suggest it is one of the foreign contracts, not the ones used by a few U.S. militias.
