I finally dragged all the bits and pieces of the 3inch trainer out of storage and got it assembled. If you look at the bottom of the tube, you can see it's been cut-away. This allows the crew to go through all the motions of servicing the piece, including hanging and dropping the round, without having to have a string tied to the round to remove it (much less have to kick the round out of the tube (which, admittedly, is an immediate action drill for a misfire). In this mortar, the (inert) round will just kick out the back, and the loader can retrieve it and hang and drop again. This was actually the first 3incher we got. The tube and bipod came out of Canada in the 90s. It took me another 8 years to come up with a baseplate - out of Australia. Now if I can just figure out how to un-bugger the sight mount wiithout breaking it. It's a WWII-era mount that has been bent, probably by people just tossing the bipod around after it was surplused out. We also have the equivalent of this mortar in the Aussie 4.2 inch trainer.
