The Canadian Gov't suffers from some historicity issues....

Argghhh!
...among other things, it didn't really exist at the time, in terms of being a government or a proper Westphalian nation-state.  Just sayin'.  And the government which actually held title, well, they (along with those cheese-eating surrender monkeys) did sorely vex us.  They were just a theater of war, and a legitimate one, at that.

Not that we ever really have put our hearts into it, when crushing Canada was concerned.  We were happy with controlling the Great Lakes, and we probably had a sense that Quebec was gonna be fractious.  We mostly just went through the motions in order to keep the Brits from being able to shift troops from there to places where they would vex us.

After all, it's better to fight on your enemy's front yard than yours.  Just ask the residents of Washington, DC during this era.

Even the New York Times (who you think would really support the idea that it was a war of aggression, especially if they could tie it to the Bush family, somehow) is scratching their metaphoric head.  They might even try to find a Mormon connection... except the Mormons didn't exist yet.

DUNVEGAN, Ontario — Although it produced “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the War of 1812 does not get much attention in the United States. In Canada, however, the federal government is devoting surprising attention to the bicentennial of the conflict, which it describes bluntly in a new television commercial as an act of American aggression against Canada.

Much about the war is fiercely debated by historians but one thing is clear: Canada was not yet a country at the time of the war, which pitted the United States against the British.

I'm all for them re-enacting their battles and reminding themselves why it's good to have arms in the hands of someone other than the government....
