On 19 September, 2012 Sheriff Larry Dever was killed in a tragic one car rollover on his way to join family members for a hunting trip in northern Arizona.
I knew of him for the 10 years and some change that I have lived in southeastern Arizona, and have experienced his leadership for the three years that I have been privileged to serve as a volunteer on the Cochise County Search and Rescue Posse. While I had only limited personal contact with him, his influence was felt and appreciated throughout the organization. Thirty years ago, he was one of the founders of the Search and Rescue team. It has always held a special place in his heart, and he always let us know it, even without a lot of direct contact.
