The Drought at Castle Argghhh!

Argghhh!
Not as bad here as other places... but not good.  We at least got a decent hay crop in - sufficient for our needs and a boon to the real farmer we have do the cutting and baling for us.

We need rain.  We've actually been in drought status in terms of measurable rainfall since last Fall.

We need 9-15 inches of rain, falling slowly, over a period of weeks.  We're in glacially-scoured loess hills with clay and limestone layers just below the surface.  A lot of rain fast just makes water plants along the Missouri and Mississippi river systems happy.

Petey, standing forlorn in a field of weeds. The grass has all gone dormant (it's native tallgrass prairie grass, well adapted to these conditions) and all that's left is untasty weeds, which like the lack of competition. The loss of habitat has affected the rabbit population, who have lost their cover and are now hawk-bait. We have are fewer rabbits than usual. We have more deer, however, as we have one of the few deep ponds in the area, so we're one of the few places they can get water without having to get close to buildings and livestock waterers.
