The Donovan Doctrine...

Argghhh!
 I was chatting with a buddy about his path through the war this last decade, and I finally tied it all together - my military weltanschauung. What I said was:

"...the experience of your trajectory through the war (as well as others here) are part and parcel of why I don’t like optional wars, or nation-building.

Somebody wants to build nations, let the UN do it. I’m sure they’ll do a super job.

Somebody wants to erase a regime that is a canker on the planet, gimme a call. But I wanna be like the police and fire department – we’ll kick in the doors, smash the windows, and fix the immediate problem and try to save most of the infrastructure if we can – but call Serv-Pro for the clean up and hire a contractor for the rebuild."

Heh. I finally found a way to express the Donovan Doctrine.

If we're going to be the global cop, then perhaps it's time to fill the role correctly, so to speak.  There's all sorts of danger of abuse - there are lots of caveats available - but as a general distillation...
