Where does "Modern Military History" begin?

Argghhh!
That's a question from Heartless Libertarian, who is taking time to pursue a history degree at the behest of the US Army - this is his response:
For me, I say the Napoleonic Wars. But I can see arguments for going back as far as whenever armies began to be primarily armed with muskets instead of swords, spears, etc. Or maybe even the beginning of the gunpowder era, somewhere around the fall of Constantinople.

This is in regard to a class he has upcoming next semester, titled "Modern Military History," which covers a span that Heartless does not really concur with.

Nor do I.  I have provided my answer back to Heartless, but I'll keep it to myself here, so you guys can have a clean slate.

What say the Commentariat?
