This is a perplexing day for me. Too many choices come due, perhaps. Ones I made, and ones made for me.
It's Flag Day - how to mark that at the Castle? I chose to fly the Civil War flag of the United States, given the sesquicentennial of the War Between The States, and even though I count several Rebels among my forebears, I am a bluebelly.
Army Birthday... my connection to the Army is slipping, I can feel it. It will never leave, I've had a DoD-issued ID card since I was born... but I can feel the connection waning, as I suppose t'was inevitable.
Rotary - Happy Day, mostly. I will chair my last board meeting as President this year. Next year I will move on to a role as an Assistant District Governor. My connection to Rotary, like that of my father, waxes, as my connection to the Army wanes. The club is in good shape, and passes to a new President at the end of the month who will uplift it.
Sad Day - and why the Castle Flag, and it alone, flies at half-staff this day. Periodic commenter Prestonius, better known by his full title, Prestonius Maximus El Supremo the First (his D&D name), known to officialdom as "Warren Preston Sights III," known to his siblings Ian, Galen, and Ann as "III", known to his wife Nancy and most of his friends as "Preston," to his daughter Tory as "Dad," and known to me as my oldest and best friend, sometimes called "WooPS," struck his colors yesterday morning, conceding his battle with effing cancer. A curse to us but a blessing for him.
There will be more on Preston later. For now...
Go in peace, thou good and most faithful friend. Comes the day soon when we will send you winging on red fire and smoky thunder from the Mouth of the Dragon across the Bifrost Bridge to Valhalla. I cannot give you a Viking funeral, but I can see you off in flame and smoke. Sleep in peace knowing that you have borne your burden well and met your obligations. There is no one more deserving of peaceful rest than you, my friend.
So, now is the time at Castle Argghhh! when we dance:
In Memoriam of Prestonius Maximus El Supremo the First; son, brother, husband, father, and my brother from another mother.
