...another hole in a family's heart.
And another marble flower blooms in the garden of stone.
Comes an email from
Castle reader and history addict John McKay:
I buried one of my former students today, PFC Jacob Dennis of the 4/23 Strikers, but wanted to pass along to you that one of your "redlegs" did him righteous - BG Larry Dudney, the CO of the 48th BCT & TF Phoenix in Afghanistan, gave the military eulogy and did a right fine job. Jacob was a mortarman, and BG Dudney mentioned he was an artilleryman by trade, when I looked up his profile, I saw where he had previously served with the 214th FA and 230th FA. I did wonder if you two had ever crossed paths.
While I don't know that I ever crossed paths with BG Dudney, I have crossed paths with the 48th BCT back in the day. As is our wont here at Castle Argghhh! whiile we can't honor them all, when war's hot breath reaches out to touch our audience, we will honor those we can. Today is such a day.
Private First Class Jacob Dennis was mortally wounded in action at a firebase in Afghanistan on June 30, 2010, and succumbed to his injuries at Landstuhl RMC on July 3. He was from Powder Springs, Georgia, a gifted athlete, actor, musician and cook in high school, and a Boy Scout with Troop 204. He joined the Army in 2006, and was assigned at the time of his death to the Mortar Platoon, HHC, 4/23 Infantry, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, deployed from the Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. He leaves behind a wife of one year, and a very large extended family. Private First Class Dennis is interred in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
Now is the time at Castle Argghhh! when we dance:
In Memoriam of Private First Class Jacob Dennis. Make a hole down there at the 'Green! Blue Shoulder Cord inbound!
