Today is a thus far unique day in the series. This is the first day when the only Medals awarded were naval lifesaving Medals, with no combat awards. Two sailors who did good work duing a fire in Coquimbo, Chile, in 1909. The Medal is no longer authorized in this fashion, a new decoration, the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, having been instituted as the highest award for bravery not involving combat.
