There are two Medals awarded for actions on this day - both for the same battle during the Modoc War. Both recipients lived to receive their awards.Indian Campaigns. Surgeon Skinner's citation reads Lava Beds, Oregon, which I believe to be in error. The fight occurred at Captain Jack's Stronghold, just south of Tule Lake, California. GREEN, JOHNRank and organization: Major, 1st U.S. Cavalry. Place and date: At the Lava Beds, Calif., 17 January 1873. Entered service at: Ohio. Birth: Germany. Date of issue: 18 November 1897.
