October 2009 - Argghhh!

Today is an interesting day for the Medal. We have 5 Medals awarded, all to people who survived their fights. We re-acquaint ourselves with epitome of a Marine non-commissioned officer, Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly - who on this day earned his second Medal of Honor - his first having been earned when he was a young Private during the Boxer Rebellion. He would have to settle for "only" a Navy Cross during WWI. And, we run into our first Medals from the Haiti Campaign of 1915. A month or so...

Today, after the fire and thunder of the last week, is a pretty calm day for the Medal, with only five awarded for actions on this day in history, four of those during the Civil War, all on the same day, and one for WWI. There were six Medals awarded for actions occurring on 2 October thus far. The first was in the Civil War, then a Navy award for peacetime heroism, then two during WWII, and one each for Korea and Vietnam.First up, the Civil War and sailor who goes ashore to play artilleryman for a while. Today is a busy day for the Medal, with 16 being awarded. Two in the Civil War, eleven during the Indian Campaigns, two in WWI and one in WWII. The award most out of the ordinary today is the last one earned that is credited to the Indian Campaigns.
