Self-Advocacy allows you to know when your rights are abused and know how to document the abuses and assert your rights

Self Advocacy by Anthony Swetala

  • No matter what your needs may be, self-advocacy can be a powerful tool throughout your life. If you are just beginning your personal recovery process, you might find that self-advocacy helps you take small steps. As your self-advocacy efforts continue, you will surprise yourself with what you have achieved.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION

Auther and lecturer May Ellen Copeland offers another reason why self-advocacy is essential: "The number one reason is that I am the only person who has to live my life. Nobody else can know what I really need. Other people can look at me and say what they think, but it is important for me to ask for what I want." As a preliminary step to achieving your self-avocacy goals, you might need to work on developing the attitudes necessary for it. For some it may mean being assertive, while for others it means taming aggression. Above all, self-advocacy requires believing in yourself.

God's morning Anthony, I am so very glad that you are finding what you need to get the support you deserve, and how to deliver it. Yes, I agree that often we have to learn how to take matters into our hands; and, then we learn that being the managers of our own lives and living it the way that feels best to us is what we wanted all along anyway. Only we know best EXACTLY what that is. For me, Matthew, also learning what "Exactly" is has become a life-long process. A lot of people equate "life-long" with a long life and that it can't be achieved until we are older. I say "no". I say, "Life-long is the same thing as right now this moment. Each person's "life-long" reflects where they are right now in this moment, today. Knowing that it allows each of us to continue to explore life as it comes and enjoy each moment of growth that a human naturally experiences. This also means that what we enjoyed, or didn't, is allowed to grow with us and what worked for us this morning just might be changed by today's experience and by this evening we may be coming into a new awareness and a new us. Perfect example of this is the person who expereinces a near death experience, or dies and comes back...they are embraced when their outlook on life is expressed. My point here is that many people are criticied for "having a change of heart" or "change of mind". Know that from me you have a supporter in your corner as you self-advocate.

Wow. Not sure where all that came from but your expressions bring great thought. Thank you.

I look forward to hearing more from you in here. I am going to pop over to "Independence Today" now and will see what's a cookin' there.

Peace and Blessings, Joy and Love, elizabeth  DRC VETPSA SD

Your absolutely right Anthony. I've been a teaching Self Advocacy skills for over 13 years and as a Disabled Veteran myself I realize the importance of believing in yourself. Keep the faith.
