It really is a mixed bag. In 1943, the Battle of Mount Austen, the Galloping Horse, and the Sea Horse came to a successful conclusion on Guadalcanal, causing the Japanese to initiate Operation Ke, to evacuate the remaining troops of the Japanese 17th Army. Hard fighting continued, and there were several sharp naval engagements, but to all intents and purposes, Guadalcanal was a done deal. Elsewhere in the Pacific, the joint Australian - United States Papua Campaign also came to a successful conclusion...

...or Spring. Or Summer. Or Fall. As a Fire Support Officer, I got to go to Graf at least three times a year, once for maneuver battalion gunnery and twice for my artillery battalion. As a firing battery officer, twice a year for battalion training. And as a safety officer for someone else's MTEPs, I got to go for a week at a time whenever a warm body who could compute safety and take the blame for failure was needed. I'm sure many of you have good Graf tales to offer... Each of those trips...
